Once everything is clean and inspected, the pivot points need oiling before reassembly. This sort of mechanism needs very little oil - a small (0.8mm)watchmaker's screwdriver holds about enough for each pivot. Use a light (sewing machine) or watch oil and apply a single drop with the tip of the screwdriver to the front pivot where it passed through the bracket behind the hairspring. Apply another single drop to the pivot hole in the magnet.

After applying a small amount of grease to the odo drive gears (use the amount that was there before as a guide), the speedo is ready for reassembly. Start by carefully putting the magnet housing back onto the front part. As you do this, the pivot in the cup must enter the pivot hole in the magnet. Do not force it or you may damage the pivot or the hole. As soon as it's in place, put the two screws back in finger tight to hold it. Test that spinning the cable input by hand causes the needle to move and, also, that if you turn the needle by hand to about 10mph and let go, the hairspring returns it quickly to 0. there should be no "sluggishness" in the return! Once you're happy with it, tighten the retaining screws.

Refit the odo drive, using the play you noted when you removed it as a guide to meshing the gears. It's not exactly critical but no play will cause wear and too much may cause the gearing to jam in future. Tighten the single screw. The speedo is now ready for recasing.

To recase, hold the speedo carefully, supporting it by the centre cap of the needle, and lower the case onto it. It will only fit one way because of the hole positions and the hexagonal centre. Fit the two rear screws.

Before fitting the glass, make sure that it's clean - inside and out. Wash it, dry carefully, and fit - not forgetting the inner bezel. Pause at this point to check carefully for any marks on the glass, inner bezel, dial or pointer. You don't want to notice them after the bezel's refitted!

When you're happy that all's well, gently ease the bezel back on. Place the speedo face down on a smooth, firm, surface and carefully press the rolled edge back using the flat of a screwdriver. If you left part of the original rolling, start opposite that part. I usually re-roll about an inch and leave the rest in case it ever needs opening again.
