Mechanically, the engine on our Daf didn't seem too bad. It was badly low on power and didn't want to idle without choke but no nasty noises and it revved ok once you got it going.

The power loss and poor idle was fairly quickly traced to a split vacuum pipe on the bulkhead-mounted vacuum valve. Trimming about 1/2 inch off the pipe gave a temporary fix but vacuum leaks are a well known problem point on these cars so all pipes will be replaced when possible.

Once that was done, it was treated to new plugs and leads. Although still servicable, the old leads looked like they came with the car so have been retired into the "original parts to keep" box.

Points, timing and valve clearances were then set - about an hour in total thanks to the slightly awkward rockers. One arm in the bonnet and one through the wheel arches to set them!

Before going on road it will, of course, have an oil change but, for now, the engine is good to go.

The engine bay could also do with cleaning, de-rusting and painting but there's onlt surface rust and it's well protected with Waxoyl at the moment so that's a job for the future.
